You hear someone describe a place and match each building or area to a letter on a map or plan. Find the starting point and the compass or entrance before the audio starts, then follow the speaker's route using direction words such as opposite, next to and at the far end.
At a glance
- Where
- Usually Listening Part 2
- How many
- Typically 5–6 places
- Order
- The places come in the order the speaker describes them
- Marking
- Write the letter; there are more letters than answers
How to answer, step by step
- Before the audio, find "You are here", the entrance or north, and the main paths.
- Read the list of places so you can recognise each one when it is mentioned.
- Follow the speaker with your finger, moving as they move.
- Listen for direction and position words: turn left, opposite, beside, beyond, in the corner.
Common mistakes
- Losing the speaker's position after one missed direction. Move on to the next place rather than stopping.
- Left and right from the speaker's point of view, not yours.
- Places mentioned in passing that are not on your list.
