How is the IELTS overall band calculated?+

Add your four module bands and divide by four. The average is rounded to the nearest half band: an average ending in .25 rounds up to .5, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. So 6.25 becomes 6.5, and 6.75 becomes 7.0.

How many correct answers do I need for band 7?+

In Listening, about 30 out of 40. In Academic Reading, about 30 out of 40. In General Training Reading you need more, about 34 out of 40, because the texts are easier.

Why does General Training Reading need more correct answers?+

The General Training texts are shorter and come from everyday sources such as notices and workplace documents, so the same band requires a higher raw score than in Academic Reading.
